CALLINGTON SSP CENTER PARCS NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS



Callington SSP competitors.

The Callington Schools Sports Partnership round of the Center Parcs National Schools event took place on Dec 11th at Saltash School.

Once again, record numbers took part making for an excellent afternoon of exciting badminton. The schools involved were: Bude, Callington, Launceston, Liskeard, Saltash and Wadebridge. Callington School shone out on the day by winning the following events:
Girls years 7,8 & 9
Boys years 10 & 11
Girls years 10 & 11

This is a testament to the hard work badminton Coach, Malcolm Cooper has invested at Callington over many years, with strong support from assistant coach, Ken Henley. Launceston School also had a great afternoon with their boys year 7,8 & 9 team winning. This team will join the Callington teams in the County final at Carn Brea LC on 5th Feb. The event was run by Kath Wotton (BDO), Rob Francis (Competition Manager) with support from PE Teacher, Michelle Roberts who provided the Junior Sports Leaders. Jenny Marchant also came along and supported on the day.

Center Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships


As with the Penryn SSP event back in October, this Competition has also seen an increase in popularity with 7 schools taking part, which is great news for our sport! These schools are – Fowey, Penrice, Poltair, Newquay Tretherras, Newquay Treviglas, Bodmin & Brannel.


The competition began with the girls & boys year 7, 8 & 9 event on Wednesday 20th November at Tregorrick Parc.The winning girls team was Newquay Tretherras with Poltair pipping neighbours Penrice to the winning post in an exciting boys final by 3 games to 2. The days play was officiated by Community Sports Leaders from across the partnership.



Brannel School were the hosts for the girls & boys year 10 & 11 events on 26th & 27th November respectively. Competition was very hard fought on both days with Newquay Tretherras once again winning the girls event, while the boys winning team were Penrice. All four winning teams will travel to Carn Brea for the County Final on Thursday 5th Feb 09.

YEAR 3 & 4 PRIMARY BADMINTON FESTIVAL (large schools)


Penwith Primary Schools' Teams.

On Friday 21st November at Penzance Leisure Centre, 6 of the Large Penwith Primary Schools took part in a Primary Badminton Fun Festival for chidren in Years 3 & 4.

The schools taking part were: St Marys RC School, Gulval, Alverton, St Uny, Newlyn & Pensans. St Marys RC School, supported by Teresa Williams who has been helping develop badminton at the school with the loan of a Badminton Development Equipment Bag, were the winners, with Newlyn in second place & Gulval A team in third place. YEAR 3 & 4 PRIMARY BADMINTON FESTIVAL (small schools)




Sennen, Leedstown, Nancledra & Mousehole Teams.

Four Small Schools from the Penwith Schools Sports Partnership took part in a Badminton Fun Festival at Penzance Leisure Centre.


Winning Team - Leedstown

The event was for year groups 3 & 4 (8 - 9 year olds), and took place on Wednesday 12th November. The schools taking part were Sennen, Leedstown, Nancledra & Mousehole, with Leedstown running out the eventual winners. The event was organised by Kath Wotton, (Cornwall Badminton Development Officer) & Martin Salome (Competition Manager for Penwith & Penryn) & was supported by 8 junior sports leaders from Mounts Bay School.

YEAR 7 PENWITH COMPETITION



A Year 7 Gifted & Talented Mixed County Competition event took place on Thursday 16th October at Penzance Leisure Centre, with winners Mounts Bay School (in Red), and runners up Cape Cornwall School both qualifying for the County Final on 12th February (venue TBA).

CENTER PARCS NATIONAL SCHOOLS BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

The qualifying round of the Center Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships for Penryn Schools Sport Partnership took place at Carn Brea LC on Thursday 9th October.

A record number of schools took part – Penryn College, Pool School, Helston School, Truro School, Penair School, Richard Lander School. Four different events took place at the same time across all eight courts, involving 80 children ages from 11 – 16, a real spectacle with some fantastic badminton! The winning team from each event will represent Penryn SSP at the County final in February.
